The Fortune Society – Full-Time Teacher

 

The Fortune Society, a non-profit organization serving ex-prisoners and at-risk youth, is seeking a full time teacher for its Adult Basic Education program. The position entails teaching 12-16 hours/week in reading/writing classes and math classes at a variety of levels. In addition, the teacher will mentor students outside the classroom, maintain regular contact with students’ counselors, supervise and help train a group of volunteer tutors, and work with the rest of the teaching staff to coordinate intake, assessment, and other aspects of the program.

We are looking for a person who is familiar with participatory models of literacy instruction, who is comfortable with a project-based approach to teaching, and who wants to work in a collaborative environment with a fair degree of responsibility. Legal Action Center – Legal Assistant

 

The Legal Action Center – a non-profit public interest law firm and policy organization that specializes in fighting discrimination against and protecting the rights of people with alcohol or drug problems, HIV/AIDS or criminal records – seeks a Legal Assistant to conduct case intake and analysis, client advocacy, training and related duties in our New York City office.  The Legal Assistant might occasionally work in our Rikers Island Correctional Facility project.

 

About the Legal Action Center

 

The Center’s staff of lawyers, legal assistants and policy experts provides free legal assistance, conducts litigation, and conducts legislative advocacy and public policy research  to fight discrimination against, and protect the privacy of, people with alcoholism or addiction histories, people with HIV/AIDS and people with criminal records. 

 

Job Description and Duties

 

The Legal Assistant will work with staff at the Center’s New York City office to assist people with HIV/AIDS, alcohol or drug histories or criminal records by conducting client intakes, investigating and analyzing cases, providing information to clients about their rights, and making referrals.  The Legal Assistant also will conduct trainings for service providers and clients about these issues.  Occasionally, the Legal Assistant might do back-up in a new project at Rikers Island to facilitate inmate reentry, helping inmates obtain and analyze their rap sheets and advising them about their rights. 

 

Qualifications

 

College graduate or 2 years’ experience in similar position.  Excellent communication, advocacy, analytic and writing skills required.  Applicants bilingual in Spanish are encouraged to apply.  Paralegal experience in a legal services office or social service agency is a plus.  Paralegal training or certificate not necessary.  The Legal Action Center is an equal opportunity employer.

Clinical Supervisor, Crossroads: Work in alternative to incarceration women’s substance abuse day treatment program.  Responsible for day to day functioning of OASAS licensed program, including administrative and clinical supervision of 7 staff, program development and implementation, and quality assurance.  LMSW/LCSW, AAMFT, CRC, or CASAC and extensive supervisory and clinical experience with substance abuse and women’s health issues.  Demonstrated success with OASAS compliance.
