In Drug-Free Zone Laws: An Overview of State Policies, we find that all 50 states and the District of Columbia enhance drug penalties in drug free zones, but in many cases these penalties apply to offenses that take place far from a school zone or other protected area.
In response to these problems, a number of states have enacted legislative reforms in recent years. These have been designed to scale back the inappropriate extension of such policies.
