This General Information System. or GIS, is intended to inform local districts “of procedures for processing Medicaid applications for individuals incarcerated in local correctional facilities (jails).”

This GIS centers on providing coverage for individuals that are  incarcerated but who are receiving medical care away from the facility – most often for acute care in hospitals. This GIS follows up on that initiative which transfers the cost to Medicaid from counties.  The GIS explains the process to be used; addresses “district of fiscal responsibility” and also addresses the 5 months of coverage to be provided subsequent to release.
