For companies which do not have an established dispute procedure listed, your best recourse is to send a letter disputing the report. Even in cases in which the company does have an online procedure, a letter is often preferable, as it allows advocates and clients to retain proof that they have taken action.

In general, letters disputing background reports should come from the client him or herself, and not from the attorney. Thus, the client must sign and send the letter.

Included with the letter should be a copy of the background check in question, with all disputed items marked, and addressed in the letter.

The sample letter here refers to a case in which another person's criminal record was mistakenly attributed to the client, but it can be modified to reflect different types of errors, as well.
