Individuals with one felony conviction or any number of misdemeanor convictions are eligible to apply for Certificates of Relief from Disability (CRD's). (Individuals who have multiple felony convictions must apply for a Certificate of Good Conduct (CGC) from the NYS Division of Parole).

Those who served incarceration sentences in local jails (rather than state prisons) or who recieved Probation or other non-incarceration sentences may apply for the Certificates through the court where they were sentenced. Applicants must submit separate applications for each conviction on their records.

Most courts rely on the Department of Probation to screen applicants and recommend for or against granting the Certificates. The attached document was drafted by the NYC Department of Probation, and explains the process for applying for a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities through the sentencing court in each borough of NYC.
