Complaint for class-action lawsuit that was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco challenging a Social Security Administration's (SSA) policy, which applies a 1996 law prohibiting payment of benefits to people who are "fleeing to avoid prosecution" for a felony . The lawsuit argues that the SSA, in its arbitrary application of the law, makes no attempt to determine if the individual is actually fleeing or even knows that criminal charges are pending and is unlawfully preventing the benefits people count on for survival in old age or incapacity.
