Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse
In this section you will find helpful New York City resources that link individuals to health, mental health and substance abuse resources. These resources provide services to adults transitioning from incarceration (jail and prison) to the community. Our comprehensive list contains many different services located throughout the five boroughs. It does not include every single resource that is available in the City. We hope the list of resources helpful and that you find the health, mental health and substance abuse services supportive to recovery.
Health
Health services provide treatment and management of illness to people living with and/or affected by chronic health conditions, such as HIV/AIDS and diabetes, as well as provide routine and emergency care for physical health conditions. Health care is provided by hospitals, clinics, doctors, dentists, nursing and residential care facilities. This page includes free, low-cost and Medicaid health services offered by State, City and private agencies in New York City and links to health service locations in each borough.
Mental Health
Mental health programs include various clinic and day treatment programs, clubhouses, advocacy, assisted competitive employment, mobile crisis, case management, self-help and peer run, residential and supported housing programs that provide treatment and support to individuals experiencing serious mental illnesses as well as less severe mental health issues that also get in the way of how individuals think, feel, and act. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life.
Substance Abuse
Substance abuse services include emergency detoxification, evaluation, outpatient, and residential treatment services to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by alcohol and drug abuse. Listed are resources to support the pathway to recovery from alcohol, drugs and gambling, including specialist services for women and children, Spanish-speaking New Yorkers, and people living with mental health and substance abuse problems.
