SUMMARY:New Directions for New York: A Public Health and S
 afety Approach to Drug Policy
LOCATION:The New York Academy of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:The New York Academy of Medicine and the Drug
Policy Alliance have come together to convene a co
nference to develop new policy solutions that take
advantage of existing, effective public health an
d safety tools in our city and state. The New Dire
ctions for New York conference will encourage part
icipants to develop concrete intervention and poli
cy proposals for New Yorkers affected by substance
  use and misuse.

 This conference follows
the historic hearings convened by the New York Sta
te Assembly last May to examine a public health ap
proach to drug policy. In a rare occurrence, the h
earings were conducted jointly by six Assembly Com
mittees -- three from the field of criminal justic
e (Codes, Corrections, and Judiciary), and three f
rom public health (Health, Alcoholism and Drug Add
iction, and Social Services). The hearings brought
together a wide array of stakeholders to discuss
and explore what a coordinated public health appro
ach to drug policy would look like. Together we ca
n develop public health-oriented approaches to our
drug policies that save lives, reduce the harms a
ssociated with drug misuse, enhance public safety,
and conserve our scarce tax dollars.

The co
nfference will be held on Thursday evening, Januar
 y 22 & Friday, all day, January 23, 2009
