Connecting the Neighborhood Dots: Promoting Solutions to Dismantle the Pipeline to Prison
Please join CDF-New York, CUNY Medgar Evers College and Casey Family Programs for a one-day summit to kick off CDF's Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Campaign in New York. This summit will bring together community and faith leaders, public officials, policymakers, youth, educators, child advocates and professionals in the fields of early childhood, health, mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice and youth development to develop a concrete plan of action to halt the pipeline to prison in New York. The summit is a partnership between CDF-NY, CUNY's Medgar Evers College and Casey Family Programs.
CDF's Cradle to Prison Pipeline Campaign is a national call to action to stop the funneling of tens of thousands of youth, predominantly children of color, down life paths which often lead to arrest, incarceration and sometimes death. Nationally, A Black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime, and a Latino boy a 1 in 6 chance of the same fate.
The focus of the first New York summit will be on the communities - predominantly low-income communities of color - that feed New York's prison pipeline and explore promising approaches including policy changes, legislative action and neighborhood-based strategies to promote re-investment in these communities. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with existing coalitions and ongoing community organizing and advocacy campaigns to dismantle the pipeline to prison in New York.
