These vast changes in demography and the reach of the criminal justice system are linked to many societal trends and developments. To identify which of these trends have had the most influence on public safety and the criminal justice system, the Council on Crime and Justice convened a Fiftieth Anniversary Advisory Board. This Board consisted of community members and leaders who have a long history with public safety and criminal justice. A list of the Advisory Board members is included in the Acknowledgements. The Advisory Board identified nine trends that have significantly influenced public safety and criminal justice over the last 50 years.
